lotta helleberg is a textile artist with a background in graphic design and print making. She works primarily with linen and utilizes a technique in which leaves and other plant material are coated with paint and pressed onto fabric. She is also exploring natural dyes and eco-printing, where the plants themselves release color pigments which bond with the fabric. The resulting impressions are incorporated into quilts, fabric collages, and a variety of functional and decorative objects. Lotta was born in Sweden and now lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her work has been exhibited at several regional galleries.

Hand-built and wood-fired stoneware is the shortest description of my work. I do not use an electrically powered wheel, but roll pieces of clay to make coils and build the body. In a way, this is very much traditional technique. Next, I smoothen out the texture with my tools, some of which I fashion out of bamboo. Stoneware,compared to earthenware, is vitrified to dense and hard rock-like quality. Vitrification happens somewhere below or above 2,000 F, depending on contents of flux in the clay body. When vitrified, the clay becomes dense or actual rock. After it hardens, I add layers of glaze to the body and fire within my hand-built kiln.

Artisan vs. all the rest

As our Holiday Craftacular fast approaches, I've been spending a great deal of time thinking about why going to shows like these are important.

Most of us artisans are acutely aware of our customers-past, present, and future-and try very hard to keep the lines of communication open and productive. So, in that spirit, I would like to offer a few reasons why you should come visit us on the weekend of Dec. 10th and 11th.

1. An artisan show will feature an amazing variety of work, some of which will not be found at any other venue except the artist's own studio. This is a really efficient way to see many things at once: convenient and fun, as there will also be music, food, and great company. I also encourage people to come even--or especially--if you have trepidation about buying artisan goods; this is an opportunity to learn about, or become reacquainted with, the range of media, the processes by which items are made, and the true value of the work in terms of cost. Of course we want to make sales, but we also want to introduce people to our crafts and discover how they might fit into your lives!

2. One of a kind. Need I say more? The beauty of so many artisan goods is that there is often only one of something, or a limited number offered. And many of these pieces have fascinating stories of how the concept came about, or where the materials came from. My most favorite houses to visit are ones where I can point to virtually any object and the owner(s) can tell me the story of where it came from, which are often hilarious, touching, and memorable. This is why artwork such as a show like this offers is wonderful--it has personality, history, and life!

3. I personally get a sour taste in my mouth thinking about big box store shopping. It all feels quite contrived to me, and I always get the feeling of being force-fed what it is I'm supposed to need, want, be like. And if I can't find what I'm after, that's it--game over. And...it's boring.

The beauty of craftspeople is that the story doesn't stop there. If you are looking for something and can't find it, artisans are exactly the people you should be talking to because they can CREATE IT. You may not even know what you want...but if you can describe it, or its function, we can make that slightly blurry idea come into focus. This process, being part of it, is AWESOME. If you haven't tried it yet...why the hell not?

I could really go on and on, but I'll wrap it up, B. Suffice to say that this is truly a fabulous weekend event that should not be missed. We're making it happen, and we want you to do the same!!

Cary Oliva is an artist who loves dabbling in lots of different media. She loves polaroids, paper, watercolors, waste not paper colors, good design, cards, and textiles. She has always loved creating things, and after studying art in Pennsylvania, Italy and New York, Cary moved to Charlottesville where she has been living and creating various media for a little over eight years. Her love of doodling turned into creating a line of whimsical, hand-drawn and embellished greeting cards, which has since evolved into other types of floral and other fun designs that take the form of cards, invitations, custom stationery, coasters, journals and prints. A love of photography inspired her to learn some alternative techniques, specifically with Polaroid photography. Cary enjoys working with clients to create custom creations whether it is in the form of a hand-made invitation, a special coaster or a vintage looking photograph.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have enjoyed making things - whether it was a poster for a school project or jewelry out of brightly colored telephone wires my father brought home one night. I used to love to watch my father use his power tools in his workshop. I was amazed at what he could create with his hands and few tools. Today, I really look forward to going to my studio and using my own power tools to create wonderful jewelry. Using my hands to create something has always been a great stress reliever for me. Hello, fellow Craft Attack devotees. As mentioned, we shall continue to give you previews of the supertalented artists who will be comprising the Holiday Craftacular Show this year on December 10th &11th.

Next up is Judson Jarvis, a ceramist hailing from Afton, VA. All text is exerpted from his artist statement available to read in full on his website.

I have always thought of my work in terms of a house. The aspects that make a good pot function correctly (balance, heft, beginnings, endings, and proportions) are the foundation and structure of this metaphorical house. This house has a fenced yard and in that yard is where the interesting questions are raised. That fence represents the boundaries of my ideas of function, utility, design, my place in the ceramic and arts community. The fence has been contracted, expanded, built from scratch and leapt over to explore other yards.

This all leads to my current work and the balancing act in which I am engaged. My love of functional pottery, Abstract Expressionism, Constructivism, and design are all in my mind while I am working. It is not a calculated formula; it is much more abstracted. The influences manifest themselves in subtle ways. The basis is the functional pot, but the function can be sacrificed slightly or greatly to let some of the other ideas come forward.

My current work is created using the potter’s wheel, hand building, simple hump-molds, and various combinations of all of My these processes. The work is fired in a salt kiln that I built on my property. The salt firing interacts with my forms and surface decorations in interesting and visually exciting ways. My surroundings also influence my work.

Each firing is a little different. Each time I learn a little more. Each unloading stokes the fire to keep working and looking for that balance.

In the lead-up to the C-ville Craft Attack's Holiday Craftacular on Dec. 10th & 11th, we will be making sure you know who we are and what we're offering as a superb artisan collective.

Details are being hammered out; we'll pass them on so everyone can plan on coming out to enjoy the festivities and support local craftwork. In the meantime, we'll introduce--or re-introduce--those in the collective and give you a taste of their creativity.

One new artist you'll see is Rosalba Valentino, local fashion designer and seamstress. A native of Nelson County, Rosalba attended art school at VCU, received her BFA in crafts, and proceeded to start her own custom fashion and accessories business.

Rosalba has designed for theater, dance performance, weddings, holiday shows and created custom pieces for a wide variety of clients encompassing a wide array of styles and tastes. She also creates her own one-of-a-kind women's fashion and accessories, as well as items for infants and toddlers. Colors, patterns, unusual materials and inventive techniques combine to offer an artistic approach to style with an emphasis on sustainable goods and 'slow fashion' methods.

I make functional pottery. That statement by itself does not explain much, but putting it in print has carried some trepidation for me. I love making pots that people either use on a daily basis or just like to look at. Both aspects serve a function, the enrichment of people’s lives. The trepidation comes out of the internal conflict of my nature. New and old, control and spontaneity, introverted yet seeking connection with the outside, all are wrapped in my work and my working life. These issues are in my work but not in a way that is readily accessible by the viewer. It is always in my mind while I work.

The work is fired in a salt kiln that I built on my property. The salt firing interacts with my forms and surface decorations in interesting and visually exciting ways. My surroundings also influence my work. It could be an architectural element, a diseased leaf, the mountains, bird plumage. I never know what is going to strike me. These influences do not end up in the work as a copy of the original. A certain aspect or feeling is conveyed in a simple and somewhat abstracted way.
Each firing is a little different. Each time I learn a little more. Each unloading stokes the fire to keep working and looking for that balance.

My larger bags are structured and very durable. The smaller shapes don't require as much stability but are still interfaced. Each bag has a surprise lining color, carefully chosen to best accentuate the outer fabric.

My jewelry is both industrial and delicate, it is edge and sweet. Inspired by the dichotomy of life, my style of elegance with an edge connects me to this duality that exists within my life. Hi, my name is Kim, and I have an accumulation problem. I've been collecting since I was a little girl, though I've never really understood the magnetism of old things as related to me until recently. It's now much easier for me to let go of something that the world views as precious - my delightful duty is to take those things lost, forgotten, broken, and in a state of decay, and show the world how incredible they are. truly.

Most artifacts and most people deserve at least a second chance... just as people tend to grow older and wiser, so do the things of this world - true beauty emerges the more storied the item becomes.

Often, the bits of broken are the most beautiful bits of all. Cracks, patina, crazing (most any evidence of again) make my heart melt and my mind race. The decaying border of an ancient box. The miniature landscapes created by peeling paint. The fantastic, organic patina of oxidizing copper. the beauty of a hole that remains after a nail was driven eighty-one years prior. These are the things that inspire me. I attempt to reuse as much as possible of every old item that I dismantle and reconstruct, down to the rust screws and bent nails.

It's fun to be an honorary Craft Attacker, even though I live up north now. In fact, I'm starting a Boston area Craft Attack group - first meeting at my house in September! It won't be quite the same as the startup crew in Cville (ahhh, Cary, Martha, Tavia . . .) but what's a girl to do when she's so far away from her crafty girls?

The news here is that I'm finally designing some journals! Small and large. Kraft and red and navy. Ruled and lined and squared. I've been wanting to do them for some time and have been inspired by many other women who do their techniques on these Moleskine notebooks, and it's been fun to experiment with my own way of making them. In fact, I think it's safe to say I'm just crazy about them!

They're available in Charlottesville exclusively at rock paper scissors, in the journal section of my website, and at various shows and events that I'm doing up in New England. Custom orders available upon request.

I think of these - dare I say it? - Craftacular women so often, and can't wait to see them during my visit in just a few weeks.

I had two big events coming up (my sister's baby shower and my daughter's 1st birthday) and decided that I needed to have some flag bunting for both. I was originally planning to make them myself until Rachel of Gemini Skye brought some recent ones she had made to our Craft Attack meeting. They were gorgeous and soooo much better than what I could do with a sewing machine. I asked her if she would make some for me and ta-daa! Now, being a creative person, I tend to make things myself almost always and rarely have anything made especially for me. I can't tell you how thrilled I was to have these arrive at my door. For my sister's baby shower, Rachel had the wonderful idea to have the back be blank so that everyone could write a sweet little note to the baby to be (she even included a fabric pen!). The idea being that my sister could read the notes everyone wrote to her daughter when she grew up. People loved the idea and wrote the sweetest things. She is planning to hang it in her nursery.

The bunting for my daughter's 1st birthday is oh so fun and even has a personalized note sewn into it that marks the momentous occasion. There are already three parties planned for her and I plan to use the bunting at each one. It really is wonderful to have something hand made especially for you - especially when it turns out as wonderful as these. Thanks Rachel!! - Christina

Thanks to everyone who came out on Saturday to support us and The Women's Initiative at the Spring Craftacular. It was a beautiful day and we all had a great time meeting new people and seeing old friends among the community! We want to thank Frontrunner signs for the beautiful banner and sandwich boards. Hi there, I'm Laurel Denise! I just moved back to Charlottesville from Hoboken, NJ and I'm super happy to be joining the Craft Attack group. I make glass and recycled sterling jewelry in my Charlottesville studio and sell online and in stores nationwide. I also write a little blog about my daily doings. All of my jewelry features my tiny handwriting in some way or another - fused to the glass, laser cut into the sterling or laser etched into leather goods.

Magnolia Moonlight - There are a few new projects in the works at Magnolia Moonlight. The first is a new series of drawings inspired by the seasons. Spring could not come fast enough this year! Here in the studio of Martha Keith, I'm focused on commissioned pieces these days. Since giving birth to my son just over a year ago, I've concentrated my limited jewelry energy on my favorite way to design: with a specific individual in mind. I've been honored to continue making pieces for significant life events for folks both locally and at a distance. This most recent engagement ring now rests on the hand of one New Zealander living in the UK who will be marrying an American currently in Turkey (just to keep it interesting.) 18 karat white gold wraps, like waves or foliage, around greenstone, or jade, from New Zealand. The stone, purchased as a slab from NZ, was cut by local jeweler and lapidary Carol Rohmann. I asked her to keep the words, "organic", "pebble", and "found object" in mind as she shaped the stone. Congratulations to the newly engaged duo, Liz and Christoph!

ByCary - After a busy holiday season, ByCary has been busy doing a lot of nothing in January but recuperating and relaxing...she has managed to plan an art opening however in February of her Polaroid transfers at the local Play On theatre located in the IX building.

A little mention in this month's C-ville Abode for ByCary coasters was a nice thing to stumble across. She felt humbled by her company there.

Developing new work, seeing her first international sales, and nominated for awards, Tavia also found herself the recipient of great press on multiple blogs and in several magazines. To top off such a fantastic year, Tavia had her work included in celebrity gift bags for the holidays! Creating her custom Adoration bracelets for 27 A-list Celebrities, Tavia had a lot of fun making these heirloom pieces for celebrity parents to wear. The recipients of her bracelets included Cindy Crawford, Gwen Stefani, Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alyson Hannigan, Halle Berry, Tobey Maguire, and Heidi Klum.
The beginning of 2010 is off to a great start as she is busy making custom wedding bands for several couples, engagement rings, special gifts and developing yet another new series called “Grace and the Machine”. Tavia is also preparing to go to Philadelphia in February to exhibit at The Buyers Market of American Craft, a large Wholesale show, where she will debut her new line and visit with new and familiar boutique and gallery owners. Silver Muse Studio - Nancy Hopkins recently changed her business name from Crescendo to Silver Muse Studio. The new name more accurately reflects her evolving interests in silver and other metals. She still makes wonderful, unique beaded jewelry, and you can still find her at Charlottesville's City Market about once a month, but you'll notice some great additions to her line. You'll recognize her sterling jewelry by its clean lines, often accented by 14k gold and copper. Nancy is enjoying the good vibes in her new studio space which she shares with fellow Cville Craft Attackers Tavia Brown, Martha Keith, and Kim Boggs.

Zapata Designs: Andres has the privilege of being part of a group art show and sale being hosted by Jason McLeod Jewelry . He has an exhibition of jewelry featuring Colombian emerald rings and work in Amazonian amber. His work will be displayed until November 16th at 1713-2E Allied Ln. (McIntire Plaza behind C'ville Coffee).

Andres will be starting the holiday season with the University of Virginia's 2009 Artisans’ Bazaar. This annual event will take place in the Ballroom and Art Gallery on the 3rd floor of Newcomb Hall. Thursday, November 19 - 12pm-7pm, Friday, November 20 - 10:30am-6pm Saturday, November 21 9am-3pm

Kim Boggs of 2nd chance studio had the privilege of being part of CCDC's 5th anniversary celebration and OLIO's 4th installment on September 12th. OLIO is a wonderful forum - anyone involved in a creative pursuit has the opportunity to present 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide to share their creative processes with the community.

Fall is a busy time, getting ready for shows and the holiday season. If you'd like to find ByCary, she will continue to be at the Charlottesville Farmer's Market on September 26th, October 10th and another date in November to be announced. You might even find her at the City Holiday Market which will also be held in the same spot as the regular City Market this year.
On October 17th, she will participate in Squidfire's Art Mart. More show dates to be announced soon but please save the date for our annual Holiday Craftacular on December 11th and 12th.

weehah! heads northA Craft Attacker is on the move! Louisa, owner and designer at weehah! greeting cards and invitations, is heading north to the Boston area. Between packing and planning, though, she's still designing a few fun cards, including this wordy pregnancy card with a sweet sparkle on the top. She will miss the crafty women here but is excited to find some more in MA. The "shop" will only shut down for a week or so at the start of August but, otherwise, all will be available online and at local shops (find 'em here). She'll always be a Cville Craft Attacker in spirit and - who knows? - maybe she'll land right back here in the 'ville sooner than you think . . .

All the works in Bookmarks incorporate parts of existing books, to create new book objects. In her pieces, she uses pages from 19thc. Victorian photo albums.

Louisa at weehah! has been busy in her studio with a lovely wedding job (save-the-dates, invitations, place cards, and the like) for a bride in Iowa (you know who you are!). She's enjoying doing lots of family cards - here's just one sample.

Martha Keith is having fun with her current commissioned jewelry projects, making sentimental pieces that include wedding rings and graduation gifts and using materials ranging from high-karat gold and diamonds to niobium and found sea glass. Here are her latest finished pieces: one-of-a-kind wedding rings in 18k white gold for a spring wedding in the country. Congratulations James & Shanti!

Magnolia Moonlight is excited to launch her new line of art prints and invitations! The bold colors and modern graphics that Magnolia Moonlight is known for are here again, but the images are more organic as each one is hand illustrated by Christina and the images weave together to create mythical worlds with texture and depth.
In addition to the art prints, Christina has pulled some of the illustrated elements to create invitations and birth announcements. This collection has started small but will continue to grow throughout the spring and summer. You can check out the new prints and invitations here!

It was a successful weekend in Baltimore at Squidfire's Art Mart!

The weather was perfect, except for the tail end we got caught with a little rain packing up...but by that point, it was almost welcomed as a little cool off!
I was overwhelmed by all the great artists there and look forward to going back to Baltimore already! Glad we got to stay today too to check out the Visionary Art Museum which was so much fun...

Spring Bada-Bing
ByCary, weehah! and Magnolia Moonlight have just returned from a fabulous show at Plant Zero in Richmond - Spring Bada-Bing. It was a beautiful day and there was a great turn out with crowds rushing the doors at 11am for the free schwag bags! The show was put together by the Richmond Craft Mafia and they did a spectacular job!
